About us

The Sargassum Information Hub is a community led tool supporting an integrated approach to monitoring and forecasting for the benefit of society.

Sargassum Hub, about us infographic

The Sargassum Information Hub aims to:

    • Provide a single point of access for all information on Sargassum monitoring.
    • Link data products with national and regional services to improve and expand local Sargassum inundation reports.
    • Promote basin-wide forecasting systems from daily to seasonal and interannual timescales.
    • Provide coordination and guidance in establishing a sustained in situ observing system for Sargassum.
    • Gather integrated best practices for managing Sargassum at the regional and national levels.
    • Give visibility to local to global initiatives and projects on Sargassum monitoring and management.
    • Discover various Sargassum initiatives, research, impacts on coastal communities and environments in different countries, and more!
    • Share news, events and on-going research endeavours related to Sargassum.

Under the impulse of IOCARIBE, the Hub is led by GEO Blue Planet’s working group on Sargassum in close collaboration with AtlantOS (H2020 2015-2019) with the support of the AirCentre.

GEO Blue Planet Working Group provides technical and scientific support to develop operational satellite-based monitoring and early warning and predictive systems for Sargassum in all impacted regions of the tropical Atlantic.

GEO Blue Planet is an initiative of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) that focuses on leveraging ocean and coastal data to inform policy and decision-making. It operates at the intersection of science, policy, and society, aiming to ensure that observation and prediction are translated into actionable knowledge for sustainable ocean and coastal management.

GEO Blue Planet works through a network of experts, partner organizations, and working groups to produce outreach materials, host workshops, develop decision-support tools, and facilitate training and information exchange.
