Navigating the Sargassum Crisis: A Scientific Review for Evidence-Based Policy

Sargassum Information Hub partners are pleased to announce the publication of a new white paper, “Navigating the Sargassum Crisis: A Scientific Review for Evidence-Based Policy,” produced by leading experts in the field.

Pelagic Sargassum blooms have rapidly become one of the most pressing environmental challenges across the Atlantic Basin, affecting ecosystems, economies, and communities from West Africa to Brazil and throughout the Caribbean. This comprehensive review brings together the latest scientific advances on the origins of the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt, its ecological and socioeconomic impacts, and the emerging tools used to monitor and forecast its movement.

The white paper highlights critical knowledge gaps, the need for coordinated governance, and opportunities for sustainable management and valorization—while underscoring the importance of protecting vulnerable coastal populations. It calls for strengthened science–policy dialogue and integrated responses at international, regional, and national levels.

This resource is intended to support policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and all stakeholders working to transform the Sargassum challenge into actionable solutions.
