Sargassum seaweed influxes have posed a serious challenge to the region since 2011, particularly for the Eastern Caribbean islands, where tourism and fishing activities have been impeded by a blanket of sargassum along their coastlines.
The Regional Sargassum Action Learning Network was launched on December 7, 2021, by the University of West Indies – Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (UWI-CERMES) and the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) to help the region better address this recurring threat.
The Network brings together key public and private sector entities, civil society organisations, academic and research institutes and technical agencies for shared learning and partnerships to improve management of mass sargassum influxes in the Caribbean.
