Secrets of sargassum: Scientists advance knowledge of seaweed causing chaos in the Caribbean and West Africa

News findings from researchers of Universities of York, Southampton and the West Indies.

The study, published in PNAS, examines its biomass composition in order to unlock its potential to be used to produce sustainable products.

Researchers found consistent biochemical composition but variations in components like alginate due to processing methods. Volcanic ash exposure reduced arsenic but increased nickel and zinc. Understanding sargassum’s biology and response to environmental conditions is crucial for its sustainable use and management.
