The Sargassum Podcast launch

We are excited to celebrate with you the launch of the Sargassum Podcast, a brand new educational and science podcast. It is hosted by Robby Thigpen, Mar Fernandez-Mendez and Franziska Elmer, who have a range of expertise in Sargassum and Indigenous coastal communities. The podcasts interviews scientists, entrepreneurs, managers, community project leaders, government officials, artists, fishermen, people working in the tourism sector on how they experience Sargassum, a floating algae that has caused severe problems when beaching in the wider Caribbean and West Africa. Each interviewee will tell of the solutions or new knowledge they came up with to deal with Sargassum.

In January we are releasing 4 Episodes

18 January
  • Episode 1: Citizens help scientists with the Sargassum Watch App with Lowell Iporac
  • Episode 2: Homo Sargassum – how Sargassum inspired an art project with Vanessa Selk
  • Episode 3: Salgax- Cómo convertir sargazo en una oportunidad comercial con Dayre Catzim.
25 January
  • Episode 4: Turning Ocean deserts into vibrant algae farms with Victor Smetacek

We are also offering an exclusive monthly virtual zoom happy hour with our guests to our patrons on https://www.patreon.com/join/Sargassumpodcast

. The happy hour takes place from 9-10 AM EST on the 27th of January. Our January guests will attend and answer any questions you might have for them. Afterwards you can mingle with the other call participants in break out rooms. How can you take part in these monthly zoom happy hours? Click on https://www.patreon.com/join/Sargassumpodcast

To become a patron. Cost ranges from $1-20 a month for individuals and $50 or $100 for organizations and will give you access to our monthly zoom happy hours. With it you support the production of our podcast. We hope that with the podcast we can connect the Sargassum community with personal interviews and fun and productive networking events. The monthly cost of becoming a patron is similar to a drink at the bar and the yearly cost to a night at a hotel, becoming part of our network is therefore much cheaper than attending an in-person conference.

Thank you for listening and for your support,

The Sargassum Podcast team
